Valentina Tereshkova was born on March 6, 1937 in Bolshoye Maslennikovo in Western Russia. As a young woman Valentina had a hobby of parachute jumping. This caused her, along with three other women, to be picked for the USSR’s women-in-space program. She was the only one who went to space. June 16, 1963 Valentina flew to space aboard the Vostok 6, and became the first woman in space. She orbited the Earth 48 times in under three days. After she returned, Valentina became a Soviet spokeswoman. In 1975 she attended the UN conference for International Women’s Year. She received the honor of Hero of the Soviet Union for her space travels and the UN Gold Medal of Peace for her representation of the Soviet Union.
